Makeup is our best friend when it comes to covering up our imperfections. However, we need to be very careful when choosing the products we are using so that they don’t make matters worse. By being more careful and developing a good beauty routine, makeup can definitely do more than just covering up our imperfections.
Personally, I know how hard it is to handle an acne prone skin and how horrible it can be dealing with them, especially when you are a model. Over the years, I have learned how to treat my skin and have put together a list of my 5 essential makeup tips for acne-prone skin. Follow these tips and you will see improvement!
Tip 1: Prepare your skin
Always prepare your skin before applying make-up. Choose your cleanser carefully as harsh cleansers can over-dry your skin and strip it of its protective barrier. I use the SkinB5 Acne Control Cleansing Mousse which is a gentle, non-drying, antioxidant-rich cleanser that works deep down to remove excess oil. The next step is to apply a good moisturiser 5 to 10 minutes before applying your foundation! My favourite is SkinB5’s Acne Control Moisturiser which is non-greasy, lightweight and is easily absorbed by the skin.
Tip 2: Use the right primer and foundations
For a flawless skin and an airbrushed look, you need a good oil-free primer before applying your foundation. It not only helps in absorbing the excess oils but also in creating a smooth and soft base for your makeup to sit properly.
Foundations that contain ingredients like lanolin and mineral oil can make your skin worse as these ingredients tend to clog your pores which will lead to more breakouts. Always choose makeup products which are non-comedogenic as they help in preventing more breakouts. Mineral makeup works best for acne-prone skin as they contain ingredients like silica, zinc oxide and titanium which are good for the skin. Alternatively, you could also choose a good BB cream instead which provides good coverage and moisturises.
Tip 3: Concealer Camouflage
For the perfect camouflage, a good concealer can do the trick by masking blemishes, dark spots, acne scars, and redness. They not only help in covering any imperfections but also give you a clear skin and radiant complexion. However, you need to make sure that it is applied correctly so that it does not appear too cakey, which is a no-no! Always make sure that your skin is hydrated before applying your concealer and that it matches your skin tone perfectly. I usually apply my concealer both under and over my foundation to hide any imperfections by using the spot technique and blending only the edges for effect with a brush.
Tip 4: Powder it up
To make sure your makeup stays in place all day and to give your skin a matte and flawless appearance, it is important to dust your foundationed face with some face powder which smooths your makeup. The powder helps in absorbing oil throughout the day. Remember to lightly brush the powder on your skin as too much of it will give you a cake-look.
Tip 5: Use Clean MakeUp Brushes
Are you breaking out and you don’t know why? The culprit may be right there – your dirty make-up brushes! Your brushes collect dust, oil, and bacteria on a daily basis and when you don’t wash them regularly, you are actually accumulating layers of germy build up on the bristles which cause acne. The best way to reduce the risk of getting acne from your brushes is to keep them clean. It is advised to rinse them with warm water at least once a week and use a brush cleaner on a regular basis.
And there you have it! No need to conceal a perfectly beautiful skin just because of some problem areas.
I hope these tips were helpful! What are your favourite make up tips and tricks for dealing with acne prone skin?
