How to Create the Perfect Skincare Routine

How to Create the Perfect Skincare Routine

Finding a skincare routine that is both efficient and complimentary to your skin type might seem like a tough task, but is doesn’t have to be! Have a read of our 4 handy tips below and uncover the routine that is perfectly suited to you and your skin:

1. First you need to figure out your skin type. Is your skin generally oily, dry or combination skin? Do you find you have that oily sheen at the end of the day that you just can’t get rid of? If so your skin can probably be categorized as oily. Or is your skin flaky at times, and perhaps it may feel like it is pulling or feels tight after you cleanse your face? These are classic signs of dry skin.

However there is a third option. Many people find their T-Zone to be oily, but under their chin and other areas to be dry and scaly. This is defined as combination skin, and should be treated accordingly. Be sure to buy the correct kinds of skincare to suit your determined skin type.

2. Cleanse twice daily with a mild cleanser. Using only your fingertips or a soft washcloth (avoid rough, damaging scrubbing pads as these can cause fine abrasions on the skins surface) thoroughly cleanse the face, and don’t overlook your jaw line, neck and even in front of and behind your ears. We recommend using a gentle foaming cleanser, especially if you suffer from inflamed breakouts. A handy tip here is to ensure you cleanse twice every time. This is especially important in the evening; the first cleanse removes and make up or surface impurities and the second gets down deep into the pores. So remember: Cleanse, rinse well, and then repeat.

3. Then apply a soothing face mask, if you have the time. We recommend at least once or twice weekly for best results. This helps to calm the skin and draw out impurities, as well as gently exfoliating and removing those pesky dead skin cells that can clog up your pores and lead to dreaded breakouts.

Leave the mask for 5-10 minutes or the recommended time allocation, and then gently remove with water or a soft wash cloth. Try not to pull the skin or scrub at all – the skin on your face and neck is much more sensitive than the rest of your body and needs to be cared for accordingly!

4. Apply an oil-free moisturizer. It may seem a strange tip for those with oily skin, but this is a common misconception – oily skin needs to be moisturised too! So don’t ever skip this important step. A lot of acne or pimple medications can over-dry the skin, and this leaves the skin thirsty for moisture. To minimize the chance of dry and peeling skin, apply a light moisturiser twice daily. Choose a moisturizer that is best suited to your skin type, and if you don’t see desirable results, try another! For oily and combination skin, we recommend trying a moisturiser that controls shine and is non-comedogenic.

Top Quick Tips:

  1. If you use toners or astringents and they are over-drying your skin, discontinue use. You will not harm your skin by not using a toner
  2. Double cleanse for best results – especially at night
  3. Always let the skin dry thoroughly before moving on to the next step
